This project will investigate the development and application of acoustic holography by shaping pressure fields through 3D-printed metamaterials for precise targeting of brain networks. We will develop personalised acoustic holograms that match the individual geometry of brain areas, which will enable targeting of entire brain circuits through transcranial ultrasound stimulation. The work will be developed in silico and will be tested in murine models, with the aim of guiding translation of findings to humans. By combining advances in ultrasound physics, metamaterial engineering, and neuroscience, the project addresses key limitations in current transcranial ultrasound systems and sets the stage for clinical translation. The overall aim of this project is to achieve targeted neuromodulation of volumetric neural pathways for personalised treatments of neuropsychiatric disorders, such as depression.
